Dhaka is known as one of the most polluted cities in the world. The main reasons for air pollution are brick kilns, construction sites, vehicle smoke, road dust particles, and waste burning.
In 2024, Dhaka's Air Quality Index (AQI) was often above 200, which is categorized as "very unhealthy". Particularly on December 14, the AQI reached 880, an unprecedented level in the country's history.
The air contains PM2.5 particles, which are harmful to human health, 33% higher than WHO standards. As a result, respiratory problems, asthma, and heart disease-related health issues are increasing.
Experts have advised using masks when going outside and keeping windows closed at home. Environmental scientists have recommended modernization of brick kilns, vehicle fitness tests, and dust management in construction work for pollution control.
Taking urgent actions to control air pollution is extremely important to ensure citizens' health and a livable Dhaka.
