Jagadish Chandra Bose: The First Biophysicist
ঊনবিংশ শতাব্দীর শেষ ভাগে ইউরোপ-আমেরিকার উন্নত laboratories-এ যখন ব্যাপক research চলছিল, সেই সময় ভারতের science-desert-এ innovation-এর জন্য একাই লড়ছিলেন জগদীশচন্দ্র বসু। আমরা আজ যে scientific discovery-এর পথে ধীরে ধীরে হাঁটতে শুরু করেছি, সেই পথ অর্ধশত বছরের কঠিন dedication-এ তৈরি করেছিলেন জগদীশচন্দ্র।
১৯০৯ সালের শেষের দিকে ইতালির গুগ্লিয়েলমো মার্কনি আর জার্মানির কার্ল ফার্ডিন্যান্ড ব্রোনকে যখন পদার্থবিজ্ঞানে Nobel Prize দেওয়া হলো, তখন সারা বিশ্ব জানল যে wireless communication system আবিষ্কৃত হয়েছে। অথচ বাঙালি scientist জগদীশচন্দ্র বসু radio waves নিয়ে মৌলিক research শুরু করেন মার্কনিরও অনেক আগে। তিনিই ১৮৯৫ সালে বিশ্বে প্রথম কৃত্রিম microwave উৎপাদনে সাফল্য লাভ করেন। পদার্থবিজ্ঞানে যুগান্তকারী discoveries-এর পাশাপাশি sensitivity নিয়ে গবেষণার সূত্রপাত করেন জগদীশচন্দ্র। উদ্ভিদও যে stimulus-এ সাড়া দেয়, এ তথ্য তিনিই experimentally প্রমাণ করেন।
বহুমুখী বিজ্ঞানের সাধক জগদীশচন্দ্র বিশ্ববিজ্ঞানীর আসরে যথোপযুক্ত recognition অর্জন করেছিলেন। ১৯২৭ সালে লন্ডনের ডেইলি এক্সপ্রেস তাঁকে গ্যালিলিও এবং নিউটনের equal হিসেবে উল্লেখ করেছে। আলবার্ট আইনস্টাইনের মতে, 'জগদীশচন্দ্র বিজ্ঞানের উন্নতির জন্য যত তথ্য দিয়েছেন, তাঁর যেকোনো টির জন্য monuments স্থাপন করা উচিত।'
