The Bay of Bengal Could Become Fishless, Warn Researchers

Despite success in marine fish production and hilsa conservation in sweetwater, researchers are cautioning that the abundance of marine fish in the Bay of Bengal is decreasing and some aquatic species are on the verge of becoming extinct. There are apprehensions that if unregulated exploitation and indiscriminate harvesting are not stopped, the Bay of Bengal could become fishless in the future. Scientists are conducting this evaluation through marine fisheries research and surveys.

Bangladesh has no accurate estimation of fish stock in the sea, and no limitation has been determined for how much sustainable fishing can be done. This is because extensive surveys and investigations were suspended for a long time. The assessment has resumed after the procurement of the new vessel R.V. Meenssandhani in 2016.

This survey is conducted in the continental shelf area at depths of 10-200 meters in the sea.

After analyzing the data from the past three years, a report on marine fish has been sent to the government's higher authorities. Principal Scientific Officer of the Marine Fisheries Survey Management Unit of the Fisheries Directorate, Md. Sharif Uddin, said, "Our vessel-based research was completely stopped after 2000. It has been re-initiated through the Bangladesh Marine Fisheries Capacity Building project."
