How Prepared is Bangladesh's Young Generation for Old Age?

Professor Mohammadur Moinul Islam from the Population Sciences Department of Dhaka University says that due to demographic transition, the elderly population of Bangladesh will escalate compared to the young population from 2035-37. By 2047, Bangladesh will become a geriatric society.

With life expectancy augmenting and fertility rates plummeting, the prevalence of the elderly population is increasing. This draws parallels with countries like Japan and China. Anowara (not her real name), who is now 70, says she did not do any proactive saving at the beginning of her life, which is creating predicaments for her today.

On the other hand, Abu Ahmed is undertaking systematic savings for old age. He mentions, "Financial preparation is extremely necessary to deal with degenerative diseases in old age."

Necessity of Preparation

  1. Creating comprehensive healthcare frameworks.
  2. Formulating fiscally sustainable policies for the elderly.
  3. Raising awareness and increasing emphasis on family planning.

For such changing socioeconomic dynamics, not only the government but individual contribution from everyone is needed.
