Bangladesh's Environmental Problems

Bangladesh, with an area of 147,570 square kilometers, is a flood-prone deltaic landscape. The country depends on natural resources including water, land, fisheries, forests and wildlife. However, various environmental problems are currently threatening these vital resources.

Notable problems include groundwater metal contamination, increased salinity, cyclones and floods, and changes in water flow patterns. Some problems such as lead contamination and salinity intrusion are caused by human activities and industrial processes. On the other hand, cyclones and floods are nature's catastrophic events.

Climate change is further exacerbating these problems, resulting in storm intensification and rising sea levels. According to the Notre Dame Global Adaptation Index, Bangladesh is the world's 43rd most vulnerable nation to climate change, and the 37th least prepared country for adaptation.

The government has adopted mitigation strategies at various times to address these challenges. However, without a sustainable and collaborative approach, solving these problems is impossible.
