World Environment Day: Global Environmental Awareness and the History of the Movement
June 5 is celebrated worldwide as World Environment Day. Since 1974, this day has played a crucial role in increasing global environmental awareness. The first World Environment Day had the theme "Only One Earth", which is still relevant today. However, the history of the environmental movement began much earlier.
Origins of the Environmental Movement
The first environmental movement began during the Industrial Revolution in England in the 19th century. Air pollution from factories affected the health of urban populations, and the urban middle-class participated in the movement. As a result, the Alkali Act was passed in 1863, initiating environmental law.
The world's first Conservation Movement began in India. This movement spread to the United States and the global stage. In 1892, John Muir founded the Sierra Club, which aimed to attract government attention to wildlife conservation and natural resources protection.
The environmental movement is not limited to legislation; it plays a crucial role in increasing public awareness. Major global issues like Climate change, deforestation, and biodiversity loss remain at the center of today's environmental movement.
